Lambeth Council in south London has announced at least £50 million worth of ‘budget savings’. The cuts will affect children’s services, like youth and play and children’s centres, again, and also housing, including services for the homeless.
Unite the Union members, who perform repairs and maintenance on council-owned housing and Southwark Council’s own properties, walked out to demand annual leave that matches other council workers.

The Socialist Party condemns the disgraceful policing operation at the peaceful Gaza demonstration in London on Saturday 19 January, which was stopped from marching by the Metropolitan Police. Up to 80 arrests were made, including Stop the War Coalition vice chair Chris Nineham, as well as a number of other protesters. The trade union movement must demand all charges are dropped.
This march was another demonstration of the fact that people are desperate for an alternative to capitalism and the two-party system, but simply did not know where to turn. The turnout was several thousand, as it prepared to march to Westminster.

Croydon Tory council closed the doors on four libraries in November. The council announced that this closure would allow it to increase the opening hours and offer more services at the remaining nine libraries.
