Croydon Tory council closed the doors on four libraries in November. The council announced that this closure would allow it to increase the opening hours and offer more services at the remaining nine libraries.
The fight is on to save another local cultural centre in Newham, East London. Performing arts union Equity protested outside the Labour council’s cabinet meeting on 3 December, demanding an emergency grant for Applecart Arts.
We believe if we hadn’t been out campaigning, the centre would have silently been closed. But the campaign has paid off, at least temporarily, and the decision to close the centre was pushed back.
Pollution incidents, aka releasing sewage into our rivers and beaches, up by 40%. A debt pile so massive, a result of decades of squeezing any drops of profit from the water company, the company may run out of cash as soon as March.

Striking staff at Ford Motor Company rallied outside the engine plant in Dagenham, East London, on 13 November. Salaried staff at Ford told us they’d had enough of management trying dictate to the union.
Parents, carers and the community are celebrating a huge win as Hackney Council concedes children’s centre judicial review. This means that Hackney Council has to consult again before making any changes to childcare provision in their children’s centres.
On 5 November, teachers at BSix Sixth Form College in Hackney, east London, started a series of strikes over pay and conditions. “Teachers in schools recently got a 5.5% salary increase and ours was just 2.5%”
