‘The Socialist sells itself’

by Amnon Cohen, Camden and Haringey Socialist Party

We started selling the Socialist at East Finchley station a few weeks ago. This was a bit of experiment. It is a short walk from home, so easy to do.

We did not bother with a campaign stall table or petitions. We just held up the Socialist paper, and asked people who came past if they wanted to buy it.

Selling the Socialist

Most people did not. The majority of people just want to get to work.

But the idea was to allow the people who are looking for a way to fight for socialist change to find us. But the small minority who are right now looking for socialist ideas was enough.

We don’t do anything special. There are people looking for our ideas. So the Socialist paper basically sells itself.

If anyone gives me a £5 or £10 donation for a paper, I ask them if they want to get involved in the fight for a socialist future, if they want to become a member of the Socialist Party.

If they do, I get them to fill out a join form, sell them a copy of the Socialist Party’s ‘What We Stand For’ pamphlet, and organise a discussion in a nearby cafe.

These discussions sometimes reveal basic disagreements about what is necessary. But, so far, two of these discussions reached political and organisational agreement. And, as a result, Rosy and Sofia have now joined the Socialist Party.

They both now join the station Socialist sale on their way to work. And both came to Socialism 2025, and brought other people along with them.

There are people out there looking for a way to get involved in the struggle against the Keir Starmer’s Labour government, and the brutal reality of capitalism in 2025. We just need to be out there, giving them a chance to find us.
