The ‘final offer’ from LU bosses of 5% is not acceptable. It would further increase the gap between the higher-paid members and the lower-paid. Even for higher-paid members, 5% represents a significant real-terms pay deduction.
We attended the London demonstration, and the Saturday evening rally at Socialism 2023 afterwards. As soon as we left Bond Street station, the first thing we spotted was a Socialist Party gazebo, run by party members.
Newham Labour Party, East London, is reeling from the result of the Plaistow North council by-election, which saw the Independent anti-war candidate win with 46% of the vote while Labour’s vote collapsed by 39.1%.
Residents of Newham have celebrated the news that Sadiq Khan has blocked the proposal for the development of the giant MSG Sphere in Stratford. The proposal will now go to communities secretary Michael Gove.
On 15th November, 15,000 people gathered outside Parliament to demand MPs vote for a ceasefire in Gaza. Chants included “Keir Starmer is a wasteman”, “Rishi Sunak, you will see: Palestine will be free”, “Occupation no more” and “Ceasefire now”.
Once again, the streets of London were filled with protesters against the war on Gaza on 11 November. Socialist placards and papers were snapped up and demonstrators thanked us for our continued support for the growing movement.
Following a very short election campaign, Annoesjka Valent, Socialist Party member and Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate for Hackney mayor, received a very creditable 1,265 votes, 3.42% of the vote.
RMT members working on the London underground have voted for the fifth time to continue the union’s mandate for strike action against attacks on jobs, pensions and conditions.
The other night, I had an interview at a local Tesco for the night shift. I asked the store manager how many applicants they’d had: “125 applications, 20 interviews, three jobs”.
