We took to the streets on 18 May. Although this was the 14th national march for this cause through the heart of the capital, support and passion are not waning. The mood was defiant and determined.

I joined the Socialist Party in October, after the Israeli state’s brutal onslaught against the people of Gaza started. I have considered myself to be a socialist since I was a kid, due to other family members’ influence.
Every time I dispose of unsold copies of The Socialist, I think: We have a paper which contains the answers to the issues of the rotten capitalist society we live in, copies that remain unsold are helping to prop up that system.
On Monday 29 April, the Socialist Party West London branch held a public meeting at the Globe pub in Brentford. Our member John Viner ran as a candidate in the Brentford West by-election in Hounslow, as part of TUSC.
Housing Association Sanctuary still refuses to raise wages. In April, state benefit levels rose by 6.7% and pensions by 8.5%. Even this miserly Tory government offered increases that outstrip those from Sanctuary management.

A third of Londoners had the opportunity to vote for candidates who oppose Tory attacks and cuts passed on by London’s incumbent Labour mayor, Sadiq Khan. Collectively, our fighting socialist programme won over 15,000 votes.
Parents and supporters spoke at a lobby of Hackney Council to expose Labour’s short-sighted plan to close, privatise, and threaten jobs at several children centres with up to 120 childcare places cut, and 50 staff redundant.

I always look forward to our weekly Socialist Party branch meetings. We catch up with other members, discuss the past week, and the plan for the next. We discuss a topic, with questions, discussion, and a reply, a great way to learn.
