Friday 26 January was the deadline for 400 asylum seekers to “exit” hotels in Waltham Forest, east London. They were given just eight days’ notice. Local residents and campaigners gave support, including vigils outside the hotels.
Despite 15 weeks of war and protest, the mood was determined and angry. Hundreds marched on Camden Council on 20 January. “What do we want? Ceasefire! When do we want it? Now!”, was chanted.
On 21 December, around 200 people gathered outside Barclay Primary School in Leyton in protest at the school’s discrimination of an eight-year-old boy being told he cannot wear a Palestinian flag badge on his coat.
It didn’t seem to be a big demonstration at the beginning. But it became larger. On Thursday 7 December, students that had walked out gathered outside Downing Street.
Members of the Socialist Party joined a protest outside the Levi’s store in central London in solidarity with Ozak textile workers that supply the company in Urfa in Turkey.
We attended the London demonstration, and the Saturday evening rally at Socialism 2023 afterwards. As soon as we left Bond Street station, the first thing we spotted was a Socialist Party gazebo, run by party members.
Once again, the streets of London were filled with protesters against the war on Gaza on 11 November. Socialist placards and papers were snapped up and demonstrators thanked us for our continued support for the growing movement.
Following a very short election campaign, Annoesjka Valent, Socialist Party member and Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate for Hackney mayor, received a very creditable 1,265 votes, 3.42% of the vote.
The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London has outrageously suspended a number of students who organised and attended a pro-Palestine solidarity rally outside the university building on 9 October.
Collective grief and anger brought one of the biggest Palestine solidarity marches in UK history. Fears that the demonstration would see fewer numbers than that of the previous Saturday were quelled by more attendees than a week prior.
